About
Francis was born in 1974 and started singing as a Quirister at Winchester College.He was a music scholar at the same school before winning a Choral Scholarship toKing's College, Cambridge where he studied with Roderick Earle and read for a music degree. He studied as a postgraduate at the Royal College of Music with Stephen Roberts and then for several years with Susan McCulloch. He enjoyed having a permanent position with the Choir of Westminster Abbey before turning fully freelance in January 2010. He currently studies with Robert Dean.Francis has worked as a soloist with conductors such as Andrew Litton,Trevor Pinnock, Richard Hickox, Vladimir Yurowski and Edward Gardner. International solo work has taken him to Australia, Poland and the USA. He has taken part in masterclasses with Wolfgang Holzmaier, Sarah Walker, Philip Langridge and Catherine Wyn-Rogers.
Solo engagements in 2012 included Vaughan Williams 'Five Mystical Songs' and Wood 'St Mark Passion' with Ramsey Choral Society and the UK premiere of 'Mass in F' with City Chorus in Holborn. In December Francis joined the choir of St Brides Fleet St for a performance of Handel 'Messiah'.
In the Spring Francis joined the chorus of ENO in productions of Wagner 'Flying Dutchman' and Britten 'Billy Budd' both conducted by Edward Gardner. With The Sixteen he gave a performance of Handel 'Israel in Egypt' in the Palace of Versailles and their 'Immortal Legacy' programme in Swanage. With the contemporary vocal ensemble Exaudi he performed in Cardiff and GSMD as well as taking part in the group's Proms debut. With BBC singers he performed Dvorak 'The Jacobin' as well as the Faure 'Requiem' in Salford and their Prom of 'Gurrelieder'. Other ensemble work saw performances of Britten 'War Requiem', Shostakovich 'Babi Yar' and Lehar 'The Merry Widow' all with Philharmonia Voices and the 'Bluebird' programme in Dedham with their small vocal ensemble. With the Choir of the Enlightenment he performed Handel 'Judas Maccabeus' in the Proms as well as Handel 'Messiah' in RFH, Las Palmas, Alicante and Moscow. With RSVP Voices he recorded 'Noel 3' for Music Sales Group as well as several film sessions. In December he performed three world premieres with Chapelle du Roi in St John's Smith Square and at the Barbican he collaborated with the experimental electronica of Aphex Twin.
Regular work with the Choirs of Westminster Abbey and St Brides completed a year which also saw the joyous birth of his second child and first daughter, Verity. 2013 sees more involvement with The Sixteen with concerts in Rotterdam and Santiago, Philharmonia Voices 'Daphnis and Chloe', the Choir of the Enlightenment, and as a soloist in Verdi 'Requiem' in Malvern. This year also sees the promotion of the Amaryllis Consort in their 30th anniversary year, having recently assumed directorship.
