The sound of the Cello

The cello is a relatively large instrument – one might even think of it as a massive violin – but did you know that the cello isn’t even its full name? The word ‘cello’ is merely an abbreviation of the word ‘violoncello’. If you don’t speak Italian then at a stretch, you might think the name means ‘violin cello’ but you’d be wrong.

When translated literally, it means ‘little big viola’. The cello is in fact a small version of another instrument, which is known as a violone. If you’ve never heard one of those then you’re not alone; only a few players around the world specialise in this instrument and the closest you’re going to get hear one in an ordinary setting is by listening to a double bass (which combines features of both the viola and the violin families).

Not only is the cello a small version of the violone, but a violone is also a large type of viola. Hence ‘little big viola’. We admit they could have just gone with ‘small violone’ but where’s the fun in that? With the ‘violoncello’ all too often truncated down to ‘cello’ in modern times, the name of the instrument often had an apostrophe sitting in front of the ‘c’. This abbreviation has fallen by the wayside in recent years – much like the Waterstones apostrophe – and as such, we’re left with the cello being called the cello!

Halloween isn’t really as popular here in the UK as it is in the US, where they go absolutely crazy for All Hallow’s Eve. Even so, we have noticed a significant upturn in Halloween-themed events over the last few years so here is some spooky entertainment for your next party.

Costumed Characters
Is it fair to say ‘costumed characters’ when what we mean is something far scarier? We normally hire costumed characters as vintage entertainment for corporate events and they tend to be a lot more demure! They can either liven up their usual outfits or simply go all out on the scares and have ghastly ghouls and terrifying vampires. Stuck for ideas? Zombies are always popular.

Magic
What can be more fitting for a Halloween party than a bit of magic for the event. Whether you identify as a witch, wizard or warlock – to name just a few – a magician is the perfect accompaniment for any event. Virtual Reality Team Building

The VR stands for virtual reality, which is similar to augmented reality, but a lot more immersive. Anyone who is involved in the experience must wear a headset in order to take part, which instantly transports you to another building or world, where you have to work together in order to get ahead. Imagine being teleported inside a video game and that is a perfect way to explain the entertainment you’ll get from a virtual reality team building experience. The technology has already been hailed by Facebook and HTC (to name but two) and there have even been events specially created where you get to defeat zombies as a team. What fun!

The virtual reality game makes use of your GPS and camera on your phone to create fun photos and make it appear as though you are not alone in the room. It’s not just Pokémon or solving clues that the technology is limited to either. As the photo shows, you could hold an entire band in your hand!

Dancing is great fun but there are always a few guests at an event who don’t really fancy getting involved as everybody else does the Macarena. The solution? Some interactive tiles of course! Make your own Animation

Have you ever wanted to learn about Animation and maybe make your own small Animation film? This a great way to arrange a corporate event and to figure out what strengths and weaknesses each member of your team has.

A good idea is to get 10 delegates together and appoint their own personal animation leader who is always on hand to guide them through the concept and storyboarding stage, solve problems and answer animation queries!

Every delegate receives a pre-made plasticine model, ready for them to customise and create their own characters. The mini-me models are a great way to ensure everyone can make their own fantastic looking character and makes for great party entertainment, regardless of whether they’re a naturally arty type! Delegates also receive additional model making materials to really bring their characters to life. The group’s animation leader is always on hand to offer advice and ideas.

Your animation leader introduces them to the stop motion software and is there to make sure the process runs smoothly with animation tips and tricks of the trade, all of which help the group create an animation they can be really proud of. Every delegate’s model will be involved in the film, with each delegate working together, communicating and rotating roles including director, animator, software operator, continuity, props, etc.

When the animations are complete and the groups has called it a wrap, all the groups get together for a premiere screening of their work. We then take the films back to a post production studio, where music, titles and effects are added before being sent to you within 2 weeks of the workshop. These films are great to share with colleagues, internally in large organisations or externally on the company website/social media as desired. Delegates also get to keep their plasticine characters as a memento of the day and their achievements!

The first records of Candy Floss in Europe date back to the 18th century, with it becoming popular in 1904 after the invention of the candy floss spinning machine we are all now familiar with.
